In this series of blog posts I will be interviewing just a few of these amazing vendors, the make-up artists, designers, florists and entertainers that I have been lucky enough to work with along the way. I would recommend all of these guys in a heartbeat!
First up is the very lovely (and super talented) Laura Cunningham from Laura Loves Events. Laura provides unique prop hire for weddings and events as well as beautiful bespoke handwritten paper goods. She is so creative and her work is just stunning so lets hear what she has to say…
I have always wanted to run my own business and knew that I wanted to work in the creative industry. I completed Art & Design in my education and then went on to complete my Degree – Entrepreneurship in the Creative & Cultural Industries (bit of a mouth full). My degree was made up of 2 parts, the first was the practical/making and the second was based on applying the practical skills developed to setting up and working as an independent.
- Easy one….Tea or coffee?
I’m not a fan of hot drinks so I drink a cold glass of milk every time!
- What do you feel is the best thing about your job?
There are lots of different elements to the work that I do, but the best thing has to be the stages of making something new. Whether that is a new prop or stationery, I love seeing my ideas and design concepts coming together.
Another great aspect of the job that I have come to love is meeting new people. I really enjoy finding out people’s stories and their journeys to get to the stage of planning their dream weddings. Who doesn’t love a romantic proposal story?!
- Do you have any pearls of wisdom for anyone planning their wedding?
If possible, I would meet with all chosen suppliers to see their work in person and to also read business reviews. I would also advise to client’s liaise with their chosen venue/wedding coordinators on regular occasions to organise when suppliers are able to arrive at the venue. This is important for the chosen suppliers to know due to rules or restrictions that the venues may have.
- What current trends do you love or anything you would really like to see more of?
I am loving the transition from traditional marriages to outdoor garden Weddings. The trend in people holding their nuptials in their own grounds is rising and creating their own venue decor and look which is great for the choice to have large outdoor props and unique styling. This trend is great for those people who want to achieve a personalised and unique day.
- What sets you apart from other suppliers in your field? Do you have particular specialisms?
With the props that I design and produce, I aim to make things which are different to other suppliers. I do so by designing props which can be used in various ways. Some props serve the purpose of backgrounds as well as table seating plans, photo booth areas and/or installations. In doing so, my clients can select the use they want to have for the prop and then each time it can be personalised to suit their own colours or Wedding theme.
My own specialism is the handwritten aspect of my work. I produce wedding stationery and on the day pieces in a calligraphy style using various materials.
- In an alternative universe which other wedding vendor role could you also see yourself enjoying?
In my dream world I would absolutely love to run my own Wedding venue! My biggest inspiration is Angel from Escape to the Chateau, but I am also a massive dreamer!
